On Thursday night we were treated to an excellent evening of entertainment from David Keith Jones. David is a professional photographer and gave us a detailed account of how his hobby of photography led to his ability to make it his full time job.

The first part of his talk took us on his 28 day journey through the Annapurna mountain range. We heard tales of his love of mountaineering, meeting his wife and history of the area. By far the most interesting part was his photo diary charting the culture of a very remote area of Nepal. Accompanying an array of beautiful photographs were many stories of the life of the people living in this fabulous region of the world.

The second half was entitled “life beyond judges” an was David’s light hearted dig at Camera club judges. David has recently joined a camera club and he showed us images that have been published and sold in their millions that have been marked harshly by judges. It was a very good lesson as a competitor (and as a judge) to think of the various reasons why people take pictures and the different criteria about what make them “good”. At the end of the day we take the pictures that we do for enjoyment, a judges opinion is just an opinion and to be taken with a pinch of salt.

I would like to thank David for a really interesting evening packed with wonderful images, tales and advice.
